System Gate July Update

As promised, here is the much awaited July 2022 update to the System Gate Ban List!

<<Chess>> cards can no longer be included in decks where the gate is “Uranus Gate”. After careful consideration and TONS of playtesting, this was the best path forward. Uranus as a planet was designed around having Units with low states that were easy to remove from the field. They were never really meant to have access to [Soulguard]. With <<Chess>> getting it’s recent wave of support, we’ve seen tons of improvements to the game! Other planets like Neptune that previously never saw tournament success are now getting tops! <<Chess>> is providing new players a easy to use package with any planet that will give them a solid deck right out of the gate. However, it has also given Uranus access to a tool that it never should have had. Therefore, we will need to prevent this interaction until further balancing can be done on the card design front. Chess Uranus walked out of testing with a 4-1 win ratio, while Alpha only had a 2-1 and Uranus without <<Chess>> boasted a 1-1 ratio. This indicates that Chess Uranus was just far too strong to allow currently. An important note to make is that players can still use chess with Uranus cards as long as the Gate is “Endless Frontier Gate”, this ban is only for the basic Uranus Gate. Thank you for your understanding.

One more change is an errata has been added. Iaijustsu was never meant to work in face down positions other than soul, so that was adjusted. Thank you for your support of System Gate!

Balance, Card Text Improvements, and more

Thank you all for your continued love and support of System Gate. We have a ton of news and announcements tonight. Each of these changes and improvements are meant to make the game more fun and enjoyable to all.

To begin, let’s go over the balance changes that will be happening based on the results of the World Tournament. To being, a huge congratulations to Ava Vassay, Devon Harman, Andrew Hoch, and Kenton Banyai for their knock out performances at the event! Three of the top 4 players all used Alpha Centauri. With a showing that strong, a small balance change was in order for the planet. All of the play testers put in a huge effort looking over the cards, decks, and strategies used by these players to see what the root cause of the strength was.

The #1 card that was brought up was Tamagear Metal Storm. This card was a 4 of inclusion not only in the top 3 decks from the World Championship, but a 4 of inclusion in every Alpha deck that has ever won a tournament. In Alpha Centauri, the Cyborg Dragons are meant to provide the defense, and the Tamagear are meant to provide aggression and options to those cards. Metal Storm simply doubled down on the defense, making it a bit too oppressive. Since Metal Storm is a Trial Deck card, it was converted to a card to help teach and demonstrate the [Combine] Mechanic to new players.

The #2 card was sighted in playtesting was Universe Dragon Carrier, Genesis. With recent additions to the Planet, it’s ability to destroy cards was simply too oppressive and un-fun to play against. Therefore, an adjustment to once per turn was essential.

These changes are not done simply as a means to “Nerf” Alpha Centauri, but to make the planet play more as it was designed to. These changes were done to keep the spirit of the Planet intact, similar to the reasons behind the recent changes to Uranus.

The next HUGE announcement we have tonight is a change to card text. Firstly, triggers will now be color coordinated to improve readability. Yellow for [Cost], Blue for [Counter], Red for [Use], [Green] for Keyword, and Black * for Automatic.

The next upgrade to card text is the switch from third person to first person card text. This will save on card space and increase readability. It’s like the card itself is talking to you!

Finally, [Summon Cost], [Cast Cost], and [Equip Cost] will all be written as [Cost]. This is again to reduce wasted card space.

The final news we have to share with you tonight is the introduction of Version 2.0 Trial Decks! These upgraded decks will feature cards with the new wording and coloring to the card text as well as improved card ratios! These decks are guaranteed to give new players the best possible jumping off point to enjoy the world of System Gate! The printing of these new deck version will begin once the remains of our limited stock of version 1.0 is sold out.

Thank you again to everyone for playing and enjoying System Gate. Keep letting us know what you want to see next!

Card Type Clarification

Dear Gate Masters! Here at Speedrobo Games, we are very excited for the second year of System Gate. There are many updates and upgrades coming forth and we are thrilled to announce the first one! Card Types are getting new Clarifications!

Cards will now be classified as either “Normal” or “Finale” cards. This classification depends on the orientation of the card. Portrait cards are “Normal” and can only be summoned/equipped/cast during the main phase. Landscape cards are “Finale” cards and can only be summoned/equipped/cast during the end phase.

The cards that previously had only “Finale” listed as their card type are now considered to be “Spell” cards.

Judgement of Uranus

The planet of Uranus has been a constant terror in the competitive scene and has brought up many questions. One of which is what is the root of Uranus’ power? At this point, I think we have found the answer and the solution. Uranus is a world that was designed to be a combo-control playstyle deck. Yet, it’s aggressive tools wound up being too prevalent and abused by the planet’s excellent draw engine and consistency. It’s like fighting a turtle with a bazooka on it’s back. Therefore, two possible solutions present themselves. Remove the draw engine or remove the damage output. If the consistency and control tools were hit, Uranus would no longer be Uranus. Therefore, these nerfs are to bring Uranus’ power output down to where it should be.

#1. Gunwands. Both Gunwands are getting a named once per turn. This will prevent Uranus’ bounce options from being used to forward damage rather than as the intended control tool.

#2. Ultimate Incantation, Sunset Riders. This card is currently being used as an aggressive “deal 6 damage” spell, when it was never intended to be an aggro tool. This spell was always meant to be a recovery/control card. Therefore, it will be getting the condition “You may only cast this card during the opponent’s turn”. This will limit this card to only being used for it’s intended purpose. It has also gotten a cost reduction to compensate for the reduced function.

#3. Riproaring Rodeo. While technically a net 0, it’s a net 0 that the opponent has little chance to answer. Therefore, this card will be getting a cost increase of 2 Energy.

#4. Demon Cat, Ardra. While this card does fit Uranus’ intended style, it’s a bit too annoying to deal with at lower levels of play. Therefore, you will only be able to include 8 copies of this card in your deck instead of the previous 9.

I thank you for your kind understanding in regards to these adjustments. These cards will be added to the Reprint Collection 01 releasing on the 28th. Special thanks to Kenton Banyai, Devon Harman, Andrew Hoch, and Louise Vassay for the recent playtesting help to resolve this issue.

System Gate Errata

Howdy gang! After our first major tournament, we will be issuing three erratas due to community feed back! As always, System Gate is a game by players for players. So whatever y’all want to see happen, we will do our best to make it so! Let’s get started.

First off, a keyword change. [Combine] is being changed to: [Combine]([Use] Choose a unit on your field who’s soul does not contain a card with the same name as this card’s. Put me from the field into the soul of the chosen unit.)

This change was implemented to prevent slowing the game state down to a crawl. It was producing an unfun and non-interactive environment for both players.

Second, there are two changes to cards in Uranus. Magical Hogtie and Wild Outlaw Dantalion have been changed to

Magical Hogtie can now only be cast once per turn, and Wild Outlaw Dantalion now costs 2 Life in order to bounce.

Magical Hogtie and Dantalion both gave Uranus too strong of defensive options, allowing Uranus to slow the game down too much.

Thank you for your kind understanding in this matter, and we hope you continue to enjoy System Gate!
